Cathodic Protection

Overview

Cathodic protection is a corrosion control method that makes steel structures the cathode of an electrochemical cell. It is applied to pipelines, tanks, wells, rigs, and other buried or submerged assets to extend service life and maintain compliance.

Methods of Cathodic Protection

Sacrificial Anode Systems
Attach more active metals (zinc, magnesium, aluminum) that corrode in place of steel. Significantly less expensive but also needs to be replaced routinely depending on the current needs of the structure.

Impressed Current (ICCP)
Use an external power source with inert anodes to deliver protective current across large structures. Depletion is typically significantly less than a sacrificial system.

Applications

  • Oil & Gas Pipelines (transmission, distribution, gathering)
  • Well heads and surface casing
  • Underground Storage Tanks
  • Offshore Platforms & Marine Structures
  • Ships and Vessels
  • Municipal & Industrial Water Systems
  • Some roads and bridges

Facts About Cathodic Protection

  • Extends steel asset life by decades.
  • Sacrificial anodes require periodic replacement.
  • Impressed Current systems protect large structures such as compressor stations and long sections of pipeline.
  • Mandated by DOT and other regulatory bodies.
  • Guided by NACE standards for design and compliance.
  • Can be integrated with automation for monitoring and reporting.
